Reaping the Fruits
This was a great month for the Rohi Organization as many activities have been taking place. Students and staff were busy conducting both academic and extra curricular activities. The highlight of the month was the music competitions and the soccer tournament with the neighboring high schools. The scouting competition was an additional activity that also took place during the month.
The Primary School Scouting Team consists of 10 students: David Ngaruiya, Peter Mwangi, Milton Ndirangu, Joseph Nding’uri, John Maina, Gideon Wanyika, Stephen Njuguna, Anthony Mbugua, Francis Ngige and Joseph Ngatia under the leadership of Andrew Kinyanjui and Peter Mwangi. They were tested on research abilities, camping skills, computer skills and game training abilities. The Scouts from the primary school competed in the district level and emerged the winner. In the second level, the Scouts placed third in the province. Despite their good performance they were not able to progress to the national level which will take place in Nairobi in September.
Click Here to see a short video of the Scouts in action. They compete by making projects out of the poles and sisal twine for their camp. They are given assignments for each structure and when complete they are judged accordingly to how well they are constructed and the troop as a whole. The camp had a watch tower, a library, a first aid bed, a kitchen and store, a table, a shower with drainage, a dry and wet pit for waste, a cooling pit for their food, a seat for the judge, a model of a water catchment system for a house and model of games, plus the structure that they are working on in the video was a table for the guest book.
The schools presented eight items in the district music competitions which took place in Nakuru. Out of these eight, two items in the primary school and two in the high school progressed to the next level. Forty-two boys from the primary school presented a Christmas carol and a song of their choice. The high school girls presented a Swahili song known as Tarab, mostly sung along the Kenyan Coast and a Swahili poem was recited by Maureen Nyambura.
The Primary School boys later went to the provincial competitions and they were number two in both items. This was a big step in the school history. The boys progressed to the national level which will be in Kakamega (a city in the West of the country). The high school team will be competing for a position in the national level in the beginning of August. The organization wishes to recognize the effort of Mr. Eric Mamba and Miss Helen Maina in the Primary School. Mr. Rungonzo, the music teacher, for his tireless effort in training the students. Moreover, Madam Esther Wanjiru, a teacher in the high school, and Madam Margret Amanya, a trainer, for their wonderful work in training a group of 36 students.
GOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!
By Bernard Gesora, team captain
We thank God for the talents God has given unto us. Soccer is very popular in Kenya and especially at Rohi. Our team has worked very hard and we have been very successful. We prayed for victory and it was given to us. All glory goes to the Lord. We managed to beat 16 teams in our Zone and went on to the district level where we came in 1st place. This has qualified us for the Regionals which will be held on July 9th and 10th. Our objectives for the team are to magnify and glorify the name of our God and Lord Jesus Christ through the talents He has given us. Our mission is to let other Kenyans know that even though we were orphans and street boys we can build and support our society through our talents.
We depend on God and ask that you pray for us to represent Rohi well. We all thank you for your support. The members of the team are as follows: Samuel Ngaru, Edward Mwangi, George Kibiru, Bakari Adongo, Francis Njoroge, Cosmos Waititu, Elijah Maina, Martin Ndirangu, Paul Lukeno, Bernard Gesora, Eliud Maina, Alex Mbugua, John Kimotho, Danson Methu, Edwin Munge, James Maingi, Elijah Muraga,Ayub Muturi, Henry Mwaura, Paul Njuguna, Gentral Esto and Ibrahim Njuguna.
June Team
The June Rohi Team, comprised of 19 people from 5 different churches, is just finishing up their stay in Kenya. They have had the privilege of ministering to the children at Rohi, the community surrounding Nakuru, and the people of Pokot, an area about 4 hours north of Nakuru. It is called “the bush” because it is comprised of small villages with little or no water. Through the efforts of Joshua Shields and Dig Deep, we were able to provide 6 water tanks to churches, a women’s group and schools. The team helped to build the platforms on which the water tanks will stand.
The team was also involved in providing Buckets of Love for the people residing in the Dump. This involves buying foodstuffs for the families, visiting each family in their homes to pray and to encourage them. In the same area, the team worked for two days in leveling the compound for a preschool which will soon be opened for the children residing in the dump.
