Guardian Outreach Project
Serving the children at Rohi is our first priority; however, we are also interested in each child’s environment when they visit their guardians. It is this concern that contributed to the creation of a Community Outreach Department. The goal of the Guardian Outreach Project is to build rewarding and lasting relationships between the guardian, community, and the Rohi organization.
Projects are funded by individual and visiting team donations. A Rohi social worker visits a guardian, and a project of choice by the guardian is determined. These projects differ from one guardian to another, depending on their needs. Our organization has assisted guardians with water tanks, dairy goats, small business start up, house construction and local bird projects.
When a project is completed by staff and/or a visiting team, it is customary for the guardian to narrate the story of how he/she came to assist the child. Most of the time, it is a sad story and every one who listens is greatly moved. This challenges the people who have made a visit to such a household. Moreover, the visitors encourage the family and the student. The child’s teacher also attends, and provides a student discipline and academic performance report. Afterward, as an African custom of great hospitality, the visiting team is given a cup of tea or coffee and a snack.
In May, Rohi and Cornerstone’s visiting sewing team presented water tanks to the homes of two guardians. The team visited the guardian of Stella Wangari and Moses Njoroge and the guardian of Joseph Mburu. Both homes were far from Rohi, and the roads were challenging to navigate due to heavy rains. The Fremont Community Church team was also a blessing to four guardians. They visited the families of Danson Mwaura, Fridah Wanjiku, Helen Ngugi, and Pauline Macharia. The team delivered an irrigation system, constructed a cow shed, paid for a driving school permit, and delivered roofing sheets, respectively.
Sewing Team Update
On April 25th, nine ladies had the opportunity to serve at Rohi teaching sewing. Even though they were not prepared for treadle sewing machines, God was faithful and not only did the students learn, the teachers did as well. Throughout the week 22 students made a backpack and either a skirt or trousers. They also worked on a needlepoint sampler. The team also had the opportunity to work with all of the high school students who made their own felt sewing kit. The biggest blessing was that God provided for an amazing sewing teacher that will be able to continue the teaching that was started.
Interns
Rohi is looking forward to hosting two interns, Emily Renken and Lauren Quackenbush. They will arrive on June 19th and join Doug Franklin, who arrived on May 10th. The three interns will be assisting the school in games, devotions, filing/record keeping and counseling. The interns will also have time to interact with the students after classes. All three interns will return to the States on August 10th.
School Opening
The main activity for the month of May was the reopening of school after the April Break. The High School opened May 4th and the Primary School on May 5th. The students came back to school looking well and very energetic. The entire Rohi staff came together for a day of encouragement and discussions and planning for the second term before school started. The second term will run through August 6th.
Soccer
The Staff Soccer team, along with the High School and the Primary School teams are all practicing for the Shields Cup, a one-day tournament sponsored by Pastor Dave Shields, a former Rohi missionary. This year the tournament will include Pastor Dave as he leads the June Outreach Team. The Staff Team, which is the 3 time defending champion, will have some tough opposition from the High School team, which will be looking for their first Shields Cup victory!
Construction
The High School Boys’ Dorm is still under construction. During the past month, the construction crew poured a cement slab that must cure for 21 days. When it is ready they will add the third and final floor of the dormitory.
The Nursery School at the dump is also under construction. Three classes are almost done and we are praying that the school will open in July.
